Rampant Destruction at the State University of Haiti: Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine Devastated

Port-au-Prince, Haïti -The devastating situation plaguing the country has unfortunately not spared the State University of Haiti. In a press release issued by the university’s communication unit, a grim picture of the material damages sustained by the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (FAMV) was outlined.

On February 29th, the FAMV was the target of systematic looting, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. According to a partial damage assessment, the vandals stole a multitude of essential items needed for the institution’s proper functioning. Among these were 118 solar panels, 12 ten-kilowatt inverters with regulators, 122 desktop computers, 35 laptops, 42 black-and-white printers, 12 color printers, 130 Lenovo tablets, 87 desks, 100 office chairs, 127 visitor chairs, 126 metal filing cabinets, 152 fans, 23 water coolers, 73 Forzan inverters, 32 large tables, 320 table chairs, 250 student mattresses, 72 student phones, 82 dormitory doors, and a significant number of desks.

In addition to these substantial material losses, the FAMV also suffered the loss of academic and administrative documents, as well as numerous laboratory equipment. Damage assessment is ongoing, and a more comprehensive report will be presented later.

This tragedy highlights the extent of the challenges faced by the State University of Haiti in the current national context. Adequate measures must be taken to restore the FAMV’s integrity and ensure its optimal functioning in the coming days.
