World News: Haitian National Police Welcomes Reinforcements: Jamaican and Belizean Troops Join Fight to Restore Order in Haiti”

Le Directeur Général a.i de la Police Nationale d'Haïti, M. Rameau NORMIL

Port-au-Prince, September 12, 2024 – The Clarity Times: – The Interim Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH), Mr. Rameau NORMIL, officially welcomed a new contingent of police officers and soldiers from Jamaica and Belize on Thursday, September 12, 2024. The reception took place at Toussaint Louverture International Airport, attended by several high-ranking officials from the PNH, including Inspector General in Chief Frantz Thermilus, Inspector General Péyo Smith, Chief of Staff to the Interim Director General, and Inspector General Godfrey Otunga, Chief of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).

Also present at the event were Divisional Commissioner Michel Ange Louis Jeune, spokesperson for the Haitian National Police, and Officer Lionel Lazarre, Deputy Spokesperson.

The arrival of this new contingent of police officers and soldiers in Port-au-Prince is part of an ongoing effort to reinforce the Kenyan troops already deployed as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS). The mission aims to support the Haitian National Police in combating criminal gangs that have been terrorizing the civilian population in recent times.

The Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) is in Haiti in response to a formal request by the Haitian government for international assistance to combat the worsening security crisis caused by violent criminal gangs. These gangs have been terrorizing the civilian population, taking control of entire neighborhoods, and severely undermining the rule of law and public safety. The MSS, initially led by Kenyan forces, was deployed to assist the Haitian National Police (PNH) in re-establishing order, reducing the influence of armed gangs, and creating a more secure environment for the country’s citizens. The arrival of additional police officers and soldiers from Jamaica and Belize, as part of the MSS, is aimed at reinforcing these efforts, providing much-needed manpower and expertise to help stabilize Haiti during this critical period.

This international intervention is also seen as part of broader efforts to support Haiti in achieving long-term stability, fostering conditions conducive to political, social, and economic recovery.
