World News: From “Shithole Countries” to “Eating Pet Animals”: Trump and Vance’s Remarks Endanger Haitians Living in the U.S.

Acting Minister of Haitians Living Abroad Dominique Dupuy

Port-au-Prince, Haiti | September 10, 2024 | Clarity Times: – The Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominique Dupuy, has strongly condemned the recent remarks by former President Donald Trump and Vice President-select JD Vance, targeting the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio.

The comments, particularly Vance’s offensive remarks about Haitians “eating pet animals,” have drawn widespread criticism. This follows a disturbing pattern, as many remember Trump’s infamous “shithole countries” comment during his presidency, which specifically referred to Haiti and other nations. Such remarks perpetuate harmful stereotypes and could put Haitian immigrants at greater risk in the U.S.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, MHAVE expressed deep concern about the safety and dignity of Haitians in the U.S. Minister Dupuy, alongside more than 50 community and religious leaders from Ohio and across the U.S., convened to address these concerns. Dr. Nikita Séjour, advisor to Prime Minister Dr. Garry Conille, also participated in the virtual meeting, expressing solidarity with the affected Haitian community.

“We firmly reject these statements that undermine the dignity of our compatriots and could endanger their lives,” said Dupuy. The ministry stressed that Haitian immigrants have long been integral to American communities and that divisive rhetoric threatens their safety and well-being.

MHAVE announced that it is working closely with diaspora organizations to explore legal measures and ensure protection for those facing intimidation or stigmatization. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Haitian immigrants through diplomatic efforts and advocating for their rights.

The Haitian government called on international leaders to reject hate-filled rhetoric and work toward fostering a more inclusive society. The MHAVE stressed that the strength of the U.S. lies in its diversity and warned that careless comments like those from Trump and Vance could incite violence and discrimination against vulnerable communities.
