Washington, (D.C) – Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., announced plans to introduce a bill banning transgender individuals from using bathrooms that don’t align with their biological sex in the U.S. Capitol. The move directly responds to Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, who will become the first openly transgender member of Congress in January 2025.

Mace introduced a resolution Monday seeking to restrict bathroom access for lawmakers and staff, stating that her bill is “absolutely” aimed at McBride’s election.

“I’ll stand in the way of any man trying to use a women’s restroom in our Capitol,” Mace said, vowing to expand these restrictions to federal properties and federally funded schools.

McBride responded on X (formerly Twitter), urging respect: “Everyday Americans work with people different from themselves and engage respectfully. Congress should do the same.”

The proposal has divided Republicans. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., criticized the measure as insufficient, while House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said accommodations for McBride would be made, though he provided no specifics.

This legislation highlights the ongoing debate over transgender rights, with critics labeling the measure discriminatory and harmful. While Mace’s bill faces significant hurdles in passing, it has sparked heated discussions on Capitol Hill, signaling McBride’s challenges as a trailblazer in Congress.
