A tragic plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia has claimed the lives of six people, including a pediatric patient. The Learjet 55, a medical transport plane operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, crashed near Roosevelt Mall shortly after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport on Friday evening. The flight was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri.
The plane was carrying a young patient receiving care at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. Her mother, two pilots, and two medical crew members were accompanying the child. Witnesses described the impact as a “fireball,” with debris and flames engulfing the crash site. Surveillance footage captured the aircraft’s rapid descent before the explosion.
Emergency crews arrived quickly to battle the flames and assist survivors. Six injured individuals were transported to Temple University Hospital—three remain in fair condition, while the other three were treated and released. A firefighter was also hospitalized due to respiratory distress. Officials have not yet confirmed any survivors from the crash, and victim names remain undisclosed until family members are notified.
Authorities, including the FAA and NTSB, are investigating the cause of the crash. While the reason remains unknown, experts speculate mechanical failure or adverse weather conditions could have contributed to the tragedy. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro praised first responders for their swift actions, stating, “Tonight, we saw the best of Philadelphia—neighbors and emergency crews coming together in the face of tragedy.”
This marks the second major aviation disaster in a week, heightening concerns over air safety. Officials urge residents to stay away from the crash site and report any found debris to authorities.
