A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea, prompting tsunami warnings across multiple countries, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 20 miles (32.1 km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209.2 km) southwest of the Cayman Islands. As a result, tsunami alerts have been issued for Colombia, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
The National Weather Service initially issued a tsunami advisory for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, but the alert was lifted about 45 minutes later. However, officials still urge caution near coastal areas due to the possibility of strong and unusual currents.
Meanwhile, the Cayman Islands government has advised residents that the region remains under a tsunami threat, urging those near the coastline to move inland for safety.
The USGS noted that large earthquakes in this region are not uncommon, citing a 7.5-magnitude quake in 2018 that caused minor damage and a small tsunami.
At this time, the mainland of the U.S. is not under any tsunami alert. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
