Inter Miami CF has appointed Javier Mascherano as head coach, reuniting the Argentine legend with his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. The 40-year-old, under contract through 2027, takes on his first club coaching role after leading Argentina’s youth teams in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Mascherano replaces Gerardo “Tata” Martino and inherits a team that set an MLS record with 74 points in 2024, claiming the Supporters’ Shield, but suffered a surprising first-round playoff exit.
“Javier brings unmatched experience and leadership, making him the ideal fit for our ambitions,” said club owner Jorge Mas.
A decorated player with 638 club appearances and 21 trophies, Mascherano is Argentina’s second-most-capped player with 147 appearances. His familiarity with Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez adds an edge to his coaching role.
Under his leadership, Inter Miami will compete in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, aiming for global success. “Leading Inter Miami is an honor,” Mascherano said. “I’m ready to help the club achieve greatness and create unforgettable moments for our fans.”
With Mascherano at the helm, Inter Miami’s future looks brighter.
