Port-au-Prince, Haiti – October 1, 2024 – Controversy erupted during the recent Council of Ministers session as some minority presidential advisors attempted to place the removal of Dominique Dupuy, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Acting Minister of Haitians Living Abroad, on the agenda. Concerns over her performance fueled calls for a leadership change, according to an anonymous source present at the meeting. However, this proposal was swiftly rejected as other advisors defended Dupuy, recognizing her as one of the government’s most productive ministers and highlighting her effectiveness in managing foreign relations, including ties with the United Nations.

Amid this political turmoil, pressure has been mounting for the Haitian government to dismiss its UN representative. Some advisors argue that this change could realign Haiti’s diplomatic efforts on the international stage, emphasizing the urgency for a new approach to address the challenges Haiti faces domestically and internationally.

In a groundbreaking session, the Council of Ministers approved a significant fiscal budget for the upcoming year, totaling 323.44 billion gourdes. This budget represents a substantial 25.7% increase over the previous year, aiming to drive progress and development across the nation. The education sector received the largest allocation, with 42.58 billion gourdes designated for the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) to enhance educational resources and support nationwide learning initiatives.

Additionally, the government decided to postpone the implementation of the new fiscal code, originally set to take effect tomorrow. This decision reflects the complex political landscape as the government navigates internal disagreements alongside external pressures.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these internal dynamics will impact the government’s stability and its ability to effectively address the pressing issues facing Haiti today. The recent turmoil within the government underscores the larger challenges besetting the nation, with political factions vying for power and influence amid ongoing governance, security, and development issues.
