Miami, Florida: (Clarity Times)– Markenzy Lapointe, the historic first Haitian-born U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, has announced his resignation, effective January 17, 2025. This decision comes as the country prepares for a change in administration, with President-elect Donald Trump set to take office on January 20.

Lapointe, appointed by President Joe Biden two years ago, described the decision to step down as thoughtful. “After much reflection, I write to announce my resignation from this position, effective January 17, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.,” Lapointe said in his statement. He emphasized the honor and privilege of serving in this capacity, noting,

“I have strived to meet the responsibilities of this position with vigor, determination, commitment, thoughtfulness, and humility.”

A Journey Rooted in Perseverance

Reflecting on his personal history, Mackenzie Lapointe highlighted the significance of his role. “Those familiar with my personal history may recall that I am a native of Haiti, a country whose government struggles to perform basic functions, and where the rule of law has yet to build reliable traction,” he shared.

“When I immigrated to this country in my teens, I lived in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, then an urban area with high crime and associated problems. Given where I started, it has been uniquely meaningful to hold a role so central to the Department of Justice’s mission of supporting our collective well-being through exercising the rule of law.”

  • Healthcare Fraud: Lapointe’s office uncovered a multi-million-dollar Medicare fraud scheme, bringing perpetrators to justice and protecting taxpayer dollars.
  • Drug Trafficking: His team led a major operation dismantling international drug cartels, seizing narcotics, and disrupting criminal networks.
  • Public Corruption: Lapointe’s office prosecuted local government officials for unethical practices, emphasizing transparency and integrity in public service.

He concluded by extending gratitude to key figures who supported his journey, including President Biden, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, and Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott. “To all of them, thank you for trusting me to fulfill the duties of United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida,” Lapointe stated.
