On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Haitian airline Sunrise Airways resumed its Cap-Haïtien to Miami service, following an eight-day suspension caused by the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) temporary halt on U.S. flights. This suspension was implemented in response to escalating gang violence in Port-au-Prince.
The flight, operated by a Boeing 737-400 from Eastern Air Express, arrived at Cap-Haïtien International Airport (AICH) three hours late, carrying 73 passengers. After a brief stop, the aircraft departed for Miami an hour later.
The resumption of this route provides a much-needed service for travelers, especially those with business or family connections between Haiti and the U.S., and marks a positive development for Haiti’s aviation sector amidst the country’s ongoing security challenges.
FAA Announces Resumption of U.S. Flights to Six Northern Haiti Airports
In a related development, the FAA announced on Thursday, November 21, 2024, that U.S. airlines are now permitted to resume flights to six airports in northern Haiti. This decision comes after the FAA imposed a 30-day flight ban following incidents on November 12, where three commercial jets were struck by gunfire near Port-au-Prince. While the flight ban for Port-au-Prince remains in place until December 12, U.S. carriers can now operate flights to airports in Cap-Haïtien, Port-de-Paix, Pignon, Jeremie, Antoine-Simon, and Jacmel.
Spirit Airlines, which serves Cap-Haïtien, has yet to resume flights, but this move signals a return of air traffic to northern Haiti’s airports, providing hope for the region’s aviation industry and its travelers.
