The European Union has strongly condemned the recent political assassinations of Elvino Dias, a legal advisor to presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, and opposition politician Paulo Guambe. These killings, which occurred following last week’s election, have heightened concerns about political violence in Mozambique.
EU High Representative Josep Borrell called for an immediate and transparent investigation to bring those responsible to justice, stating, “In a democracy, there is no place for politically motivated killings.” The EU also emphasized protecting political freedoms and urged all sides to exercise restraint in this volatile post-election period.
The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM), led by Laura Ballarín, is actively monitoring the situation and has stressed the need for national authorities to ensure the safety of all political candidates. The EU also expects Mozambique’s Election Management Bodies to uphold transparency and respect the people’s will throughout the electoral process.
