Boston, MA, September 13, 2024 – (The Clarity Times) – In a tragic turn of events, Michaela Mabinty DePrince, the internationally acclaimed ballerina known for her inspiring journey from war-torn Sierra Leone to the global stage, passed away at age 29. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Michaela DePrince’s remarkable story began in a Sierra Leonean orphanage, where she discovered ballet through a Dance Magazine. Adopted by a New Jersey couple, she trained in ballet and achieved prominence with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Dutch National Ballet. She joined Boston Ballet as a second soloist in 2021.
DePrince’s story of resilience and triumph captivated millions and broke barriers in the world of ballet, making her a symbol of hope and representation for young dancers of color. Her memoir, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, is being adapted into a film by Madonna. Michaela DePrince also appeared in Beyoncé’s Lemonade and an updated version of Coppelia.
