OTTAWA, Ontario – December 18, 2024 – Fabienne Colas, a trailblazing advocate for cultural diversity in Canada, has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honorable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada. Colas joins 87 other distinguished individuals recognized for their extraordinary contributions to society.

The announcement highlights the significant impact Colas has had in promoting diversity and inclusion through film, art, and culture. As the founder of the Fabienne Colas Foundation, she has spearheaded initiatives that have provided a platform for thousands of artists of African descent across North America. Her dedication to cultural representation has made her a beacon of inspiration for marginalized communities.

In her official statement, Governor General Mary Simon praised the appointees:

“Members of the Order of Canada are builders of hope for a better future. Each in their own way, they broaden the realm of possibilities and inspire others to continue pushing their boundaries. Thank you for your perseverance, fearless leadership, and visionary spirit, and welcome to the Order of Canada.”

Fabienne Colas’ Heartfelt Reaction

Following the announcement, Colas expressed her gratitude on her LinkedIn profile:

“Words are too poor to express my gratitude, humility, and pride in sharing my appointment to the #OrderOfCanada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada – one of Canada’s highest honors. Receiving this top honor alongside changemakers such as Ryan Reynolds O.C., O.B.C., Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, C.M., C.Q., & others, makes this even more special.”

Colas reflected on the challenges and achievements of the past year, including the 20th anniversary of the Fabienne Colas Foundation and the Montreal International Black Film Festival, as well as the acquisition of the historic Colas Theatre, set to reopen in 2027. She also highlighted her receipt of an Honorary Doctorate from Concordia University and the King Charles III Coronation Medal earlier this year.

Celebrating a Legacy of Cultural Impact

Her Excellency’s official citation for Colas reads:

“A leading figure in Canada’s cultural diversity, Fabienne Colas has dedicated herself to promoting diversity and inclusion in film, art and culture, in Canada and abroad. Through the Fabienne Colas Foundation, she has been a driving force behind the creation of incubators, training programs, events, and festivals that have showcased thousands of artists of African descent across North America.”

Colas shared her dedication of this honor to her family, her foundation’s board members, and the marginalized artists whose voices she strives to amplify. She added, “This recognition encourages me to continue building more bridges through the arts for a more diverse and inclusive future – now more than ever.”
