Gatineau, QB, Canada – November 17, 2024—On November 17, 2024, Beethova Obas and his band took the stage at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, to honor the 221st anniversary of the Battle of Vertières. This historic battle, in which Haiti’s Indigenous army triumphed over French forces, remains a defining moment in the nation’s history.
This two-hour show, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., started and ended on time as expected. Shortly before the artist’s performance, a mini-documentary recounting the story of this historic battle and its lasting and profound impact on Haiti was screened for the audience.
In the first part of the performance, the distinguished audience, which turned out in large numbers, enjoyed many songs from Beethova’s rich repertoire. Highlights included “Le Chant de Liberté,” “Si,” and “Kole Zepòl,” the latter brilliantly performed by Emeline Michel at the second edition of the “Konkou Mizik American Airlines” in 1987.
During the intermission, Haiti’s ambassador to Canada, Weber Arthus, presented Beethova with a plaque of honor for his outstanding contribution to Haitian culture. The break also featured a brief sketch by three artists to raise awareness about domestic violence.
In the second half of the show, Charles Obas’ son delighted the audience with compositions such as “Bon Bagay,” “Manman,” and “Couleur Café.” The concert ended with a medley version of “Lina” by Ti Paris, which electrified the crowd.
Recovering from a serious accident earlier this year, Beethova Obas stayed at the venue for nearly an hour and a half after his performance. He graciously interacted with fans, posed for photos, and signed CDs and T-shirts.
The day before, on November 16, Beethova had performed in Montreal.
