Port-au-Prince, Haiti—The Haitian capital descended into chaos Thursday as bursts of automatic gunfire echoed near Champ de Mars, triggering widespread panic. Civilians fled in all directions, fearing for their safety in yet another episode of violence that underscores the country’s deepening crisis.

Despite the government spending over a billion gourdes during the holiday season, no concrete efforts have been made to support displaced families left vulnerable by ongoing violence. Meanwhile, law enforcement’s latest crackdown on suspected gang affiliates, including former parliamentarians with alleged ties to criminal groups, has intensified political instability.

The recent move by the Haitian National Police’s investigative branch, the DCPJ, to issue warrants for multiple individuals, some reportedly close to high-ranking government officials, has fueled speculation of corruption within the country’s leadership. The growing divide among political factions has heightened unrest, trapping the population in a dangerous power struggle.

With no resolution in sight, residents of Port-au-Prince continue to suffer the consequences of a failing security system. As authorities focus on political rivalries, armed groups operate unchecked, further exacerbating the country’s humanitarian crisis.
