Jacmel, Haiti – (The Clarity Times) Haiti’s president of the Transitional Presidential Council, Leslie Voltaire, and Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, signed several historical agreements on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. The high-level discussions marked a pivotal moment in the relationship between the two nations, focusing on agriculture, education, climate change, and security.

The agreements include a protocol to enhance agricultural collaboration, promote food security, and support rural farming initiatives. In addition, the leaders signed a memorandum on environmental cooperation, prioritizing renewable energy, ecological restoration, and cross-border water management.

Education was a key focus, with both nations committing to creating opportunities for Haitian students through Spanish language programs, virtual education initiatives, and partnerships between universities. Cultural exchanges were also highlighted, recognizing Haiti’s historical role in Latin America’s independence.

A security cooperation agreement aims to enhance public safety efforts, including training for security forces and combating transnational crime. Colombia also pledged humanitarian support for displaced populations and repatriates in Haiti.

President Petro emphasized Colombia’s dedication to Haiti’s stabilization and development, while President Voltaire called the meeting a turning point for South-South cooperation. Both leaders expressed optimism about the future of their partnership, grounded in peace, solidarity, and shared prosperity.

This meeting reinforces the historical bond between the two nations, dating back to the era of Pétion and Bolívar, and sets a foundation for sustained collaboration in the future.
