BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. has died at age 20, a month after suffering a severe head injury during the Magic City Classic against Alabama State on October 26.

The redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, sustained multiple brain bleeds after a head-to-head collision during a kickoff return. The injury, which occurred one day before his 20th birthday, required emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Despite his family’s unwavering support and extensive medical care, Burnett succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, the Jefferson County Coroner confirmed.

The game, a heated rivalry between in-state schools, saw Burnett’s devastating injury during the Bulldogs’ 27-19 loss. Witnesses described the collision as intense, with Burnett collapsing moments after the impact. The incident has reignited concerns about safety measures and concussion protocols in college football.

“Medrick was more than an athlete; he was an incredible young man who inspired everyone around him,” said Athletic Director Dr. Paul A. Bryant.

Burnett, who transferred from Grambling State University, recorded five tackles this season. His tragic passing underscores the risks of head injuries in football and leaves a lasting impact on his team and community.
