Port-au-Prince, November 13, 2024 – The Clarity Times: In a press release from the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, the United States formally recognized Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as Haiti’s new Prime Minister, following his appointment by Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (CPT). This decision comes after deliberations led to the conclusion that former Prime Minister Garry Conille could no longer effectively advance Haiti’s goals. The U.S. thanked Conille for his service and expressed its commitment to support Fils-Aimé and the CPT in the crucial months ahead.
The Embassy’s statement highlighted that this transition is seen as a positive step toward strengthening security and governance in Haiti. These two critical areas have faced significant challenges in recent years. The U.S. emphasized its intention to work closely with Prime Minister Fils-Aimé and the CPT to address urgent national priorities and prepare for much-needed free and fair elections.
The U.S. also welcomed the CPT’s commitment to developing a joint action plan with Fils-Aimé. This plan will outline a clear vision for improving security and governance, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of both the Prime Minister and the CPT to prevent future obstacles and ensure accountability.
The press release stressed the importance of accountability within the CPT, domestically and internationally. The U.S. highlighted that Haiti’s urgent need for effective governance must precede personal or political interests. This aligns with the Haitian public’s increasing calls for transparency, responsibility, and capable leadership amid ongoing political uncertainty and economic hardship.
Reaffirming its commitment to Haiti, the United States pledged continued support for the Haitian people during this challenging period, as the country faces rising violence, food insecurity, and historic levels of displacement. The Biden administration believes that a stable and prosperous Haiti benefits its people and the broader region.
This renewed international support has generated cautious optimism among Haitians, many of whom view this shift in leadership as a potential turning point toward stability and security. However, experts caution that meaningful progress will depend on international support and sustained internal efforts to combat corruption and implement structural reforms.
As Haiti embarks on this new phase, all eyes are on Prime Minister Fils-Aimé and the CPT to see if this leadership change can help bring about peace, security, and economic recovery.
