Washington, D.C – (ClarityTimes) The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has suspended all U.S. flights to and from Haiti for 30 days after a frightening incident on Monday. A Spirit Airlines flight traveling from Fort Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince was struck by gunfire as it attempted to land. Fortunately, no passengers were hurt, but one flight attendant reported minor injuries. The plane quickly diverted to Santiago, Dominican Republic, for safety.
This ban from the FAA also includes restrictions on flying below 10,000 feet in Haiti’s airspace, aimed at protecting travelers and flight crews from increasing violence. Airlines including Spirit, JetBlue, and American have canceled all flights to Haiti due to security risks.
The U.S. State Department has also issued warnings, alerting travelers about “armed violence” in Haiti, where gang activity is reportedly targeting travel routes, airports, and other transit points around Port-au-Prince.
This 30-day flight suspension underscores the FAA’s commitment to safety amid Haiti’s ongoing crisis. With rising gang violence and unstable conditions, U.S. authorities are urging travelers to exercise extreme caution if considering travel to Haiti.
