Port-au-Prince, Haiti – October 1, 2024 – Haitian Foreign Affairs Minister Dominique Dupuy has been summoned for an urgent meeting amid rising concerns over Haiti’s delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly, held from September 24 to 26, 2024. Scheduled for October 2, 2024, the meeting seeks to resolve “serious misunderstandings” related to diplomatic protocols and security arrangements.
In a letter dated September 30, 2024, Jean-Victor Harvey Jean-Baptiste, Cabinet Director of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT), emphasized the need for Minister Dupuy to present documents pertaining to bilateral meetings and security provisions for key Haitian officials at the UN. The meeting will be held at Villa d’Accueil at 11:00 a.m.
A major source of controversy involves the initial lack of security protection for CPT President Edgard Leblanc. U.S. authorities were reportedly uncertain whether the CPT or Prime Minister Gary Conille would officially represent Haiti, leading to confusion and tension. After intense negotiations, Leblanc was eventually granted security, though he arrived in New York later than Prime Minister Conille and Minister Dupuy.
